Tommy’s Will be open tomorrow,  Tuesday
CINCO DE MAYO!!!
Please check out:
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2009-04-30-cinco-de-mayo_N.htm
And join us for the nation’s BEST MARGARITAS!!!
Have you ever attended JAZZFEST in New Orleans?  If not please consider attending the US’ best music festival!  I am am still kicking myself in the head as this was my first fest since Katrina. Prior to this, I had attended 9/10.  What was I thinking?  We attended first weekend and everyday saw worldclass musicians.  Special thanks to Choo Choo, Will, Greg and Bill.   And thanks to Rene and Albert too!
Did you know that the cocktail was invented in new Orleans?  If you are a bartender, this better not be news.  However I think most people do not know this.  Last week I  had the great pleasure and privilege to be the 6th speaker at the Museum of the American Cocktail (Motac). We were  welcomed by legendary New Orlinean bartender, Chris McMillian and his wife Laura and a spectacular team of volunteer bartenders from some of the city’s best venues. Thank you for making us feel welcome and for listening.  Please come visit Tommy’s whenever you are in San Francisco. Please vist the Motac website and become a member if you can.  It is a great cause! http://www.museumoftheamericancocktail.org/
As for food, I have always said that the 4 most special places to have a restaurant in the US are New York, Chicago, San Francisco and New Orleans. New Orleans is strong and back.  Kudos to the restaurant community for keeping it going and thriving.  I did not hit the trendiest joints but had great experiences at Herbsaint, Luke, Parkway bakery, Tujaques, Pascal Manale’s and Jacques-Imo’s! Oh and of course thanks to all at Yo Mamas, the best tequila bar in New Orleans!!! I was blown away at the selection, given the location.  Thanks to Adamo for the Paradiso!  And by the way the burgers at Yo Mamas are amazing and they serve until 2 or 3 am!  The only reason we could not visit more restaurants was that there was too much food at Jazzfest !
I also wish to thank Harvey!   Harvey we love you!  Thank you for allowing us into your home!  Thanks also to all at the worl famous Kliebert Alligator and Turtle farm: Thanks Janet, Jennifer, Bruce and Arturo!
Finally thanks to Shawn and Patti and Ritchi at Dos Jefes.  Dos Jefes is the best cigar bar in new Orleans.  Shawn and Ritchie have an amazing place that showcases great music, great spirits and cocktails and gravy if you like fine cigars.  I brought a Partagas Anniversary Salomon and enjoyed it with Paradiso while listening to Wendell and Tom! Nothin’ finer!
Hope to see you soon.  And as always, thanks for coming!

Inez, Ashly and Bel and Claudia.  Claudia is the bomb!!  Ladies thank you so much for coming and I hope you enjoy your trip to San Francisco!

 Wednesday January 21, 2009

WOW!  What an amazing day for the United States of America!   I hope you all watched the inauguration and its festivities.  Congratulations to President Barack Obama!

President Obama has a huge job to do.  I hope we all support him and give him the chance to make a difference.  It will be no easy task and 2009 could be brutal.  But remember in these tough times, Tommy’s delivers even more value!

I would like to thank Guillermo Erickson Sauza of Tequila Fortaleza for orchestrating our Fortaleza promotion on Saturday January 17th.  Not only did everyone enjoy Fortaleza tequila but Guillermo treated us to some his amazing 5 year old añejo at 47.5 % abv.  I cannot wait to be able to offer it to everyone.

I would also like to thank Enrico Caruso from Tequila 4 Copas.  Last night he and I worked the Obama inaugural bash at the Metreon, serving what seemed like thousands of pomegranate and organic 4 Copas margaritas.   As usual we were the most popular bar and even with Danny R.’s help had trouble keeping up!  I am generally not star struck but I must admit it was an honor to meet Ronnie Lott.  What a class act.

Hey have you guys seen the 2 new fresh mixes we realeased?  We finally released a delightful mojito mix that will compliment any white rum and free you from muddling.  So please remember if you cannot reach for your Mister Mojito muddler and crave a mojito, reach for your Tommy’s fresh Mojito mix and become a master mixologist instantly!  We also released a delicious chipote bloody mary mix.  Finally if you cannot come viist us at Tommy’s and you have that craving, please ask your local retailer for Tommy’s Margarita mix!

Thank you to Trevor and Brook for becoming members of Consortzio Sin Fronteras!   Phil, I love this town!!!!
See you next week!

I just got back from Jalisco where the weather was unuaslly warm, just like here.  As usual I visited several distilleries and met with several owners.  The consensus about the recession was that when the US has a cold, Mexico gets a fever.  I certainly hope that growth continues and that quality is not affected.  I have already tasted a few big brands and quality has changed.

This Saturday, the 17th we will host Guillermo Erickson Sauza, owner of La Fortaleza.  Please come by and meet him.

Have a great week!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for visiting Tommy's whether it was in person or in your thoughts.  We are eternally grateful for having the best guests in the world!!!

2009 promises to bring some nice surprises and good times.  Even though it will be a time for belt tightening, we would love to see everyone back even if it is just to say hello because one is in the neighborhood.

"See" you next week !!

Tuesday December 9, 2008

I hope everyone is in Holiday spirit mode!   Last week was awesome: On Tuesday 11 of  us, later followed by Mary F. and her sister and friend went to the new EAST SIDE WEST and had a spectacular dinner!   Chef Rob Lam has Terminator Chef Dino making the most wicked fried chicken!  The bar team which was trained by Jacques B. is outstanding! Thank you Danny for the amazing drinks.  Fianlly Kurt is holding down the fort!  Definately check EAST SIDE WEST out soon!

On Wednesday I got to fly downsouth and check out another cool new spot in San Diego: La Puerta.  La Puerta is by far the most serious tequila bar in SD.  Even though Agave in Old Town has a huge selection, I feel that the folks at La Puerta really know Tequila better and are more interested in serving great Tequila than having 3 million brands.  Nice job guys.  La Puerta is located in the Gaslamp district of San Diego.  Then Enrico C. and myself were treated to a fabulous dinner in Malibu with nani and Mel.  Than you guys so much!!!!
On Thursday I shared some of Jalisco's best tequilas: El Tesoro, Partida, 4 Copas and Siete Leguas with the Tourist Board of Cabo San Lucas Mexico at the new Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills!  Look for my blog on this event on the PARTIDA website!

I concluded the evening with a spectacular steak from Mastro's and a Bolivar Belicosos Fino from 2000!  Life is amazing and good.   God bless everyone!

 Monday December 1, 2008

Our hearts go out to everyone in Mumbai.  India is a beautiful and powerful country that must set an example  for Asia.  No one should tolerate such cowardly acts.  I hope justice is served.

I hope everyone in America that celebrated Thanksgiving had a great one.  It is my favorite eating holiday and I must say I was a good boy!

We feel very fortunate that Tommy's has been able to serve our guests for over 43 years!  Even though Tommy's is not one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco we have certainly contributed our fair share to not only the bartending culture but also to the fabric of this amazing city.  One of the things that makes a neighborhood restuarant so special to me is seeing the same people from the owners, hosts, bussers, servers, the dishwashers!   and of course most importantly our guests.  I was ecstatic to see Miss Heather and Gibb from Aspen and last night Carrie, Eric and Stacey.  Their visits conjured up so many great memories.  These are just some of the things that make a small, mom and pop, neighborhood joint a great place to work at and make friends.  Everyone have a great week!

Thursday November 26,2008

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!!!

Though this holiday is only celebrated in the US, I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks for all of the amazing people that make up the Tommy's family: our guests, employees, my family and yours!  May you all be in the presence of people you love and cherish.

Tommy's is closed today.  We wil reopen on Friday and resume our normal schedule until Christmas.

I would also like to congratulate Don Raul Plascencia.  He and his partners recently sold Destileria San Nicolas to Gruppo Campari.  Though it is also a littlke sad to see another Tequila Distillery be sold , it is also a sign that Tequila becomes even more global.  I know Gruppo Campari will help put Tequila in the reach of more consumers internationally.

Congratulations to Cate C. and Aaron B.   who graduated last night form our Tequila program.

Also I wish to personally thank Don Carlos L., Peraza, Fernandito, Mayda, Don Abel, Don Eduardo and all who made our stay so amazing.

Congratulations to Don Abel and his team for an amazing 15 years.  You guys are the best on earth!  It is a true priveledge to be your friends.

Make sure you see the new James Bond movie and drink some Bollinger!  See you on Friday!

Wow!!!!!  Congratulations to President elect, Senator Barrack Obama.  It is time for our country to take a new direction.  I wish him the support and the strength of the American people to help restore our country’s prominence.
Now back to reality.  Congratulations to newly graduated Tequila Master Jacob Stillman and thanks to Jacob for bringing Shannon and introducing her to the Tommy’s Blue Agave Club.  Remember Shannon, you now have to graduate!!!
The most exclusive party in the Tequila business was held on Friday.  We were extremely privileged to have been the only restaurateurs on earth to be invited.   Juan Domingo Beckman and the Cuervo family held the 13th Reserva de La Familia party to introduce Marco Arce and his amazing artwork that covers the 2009 Reserva Box.  Now wait a  minute.  Reserva was released in 1995 for the 200th anniversary of the Cuervo company.  Back in 1995 Tommy’s made the largest independent purchase of Reserva de La Familia, never having seen the final package in the US.  Why?  It was a no brainer.  I was fortunate enough to receive sample bottles and thoroughly  enjoyed them and was blown away with the quality and taste.  Over the years Reserva de La Familia has been a product that I have always looked forward to tasting and seeing.  And though I have my favorite vintages, Reserva  is delicious extra añejo and a supreme value.  I hate to do this but I will tease you by not describing the box until next week!!!  Suffice it to say that I will put up some cool pictures next week.  I hope you have the patience to wait!!
Here is another little scoop: Charbay Tequila.  Of course 100% agave.  Made form estate grown agave, in the Highlands of Jalisco by a 13th generation master distiller.  Coming in March…
I arrived from Jalisco very late last night.  Email me for questions.  AS always, the Tequila industry is the most vibrant , amazing and funnest spirit category.  I hope if you are of legal drinking age, you are enjoying tequila responsibly!!!
See you next week…

Thursday October 23, 2008

I love baseball!!!!   Too bad our Giant's and A's did not go anywhere.  I hope the Rays-Phillies series is a good one.  Of course everyone is watching it at Tommy's!

This is a special greeting to Kelly Boydell :  Hello from Julio @ Tommy's!!!  Rumor has it that Tommy's margaritas had something to do with Jack and Grant!!!  Like I have always said, tequila will increase the population!   So Kelly I am with David and we are having a some margaritas!  Rest assured he is with Eric and Jim.  I cannot believe it has been 8 years since I have seen you.  You are due for a return visit and find Dave's Tequila Club card for him as it is still valid!   Hope to see you soon, Julio

Happy Belated Birthday to Sammy Hagar (Oct 13) and my mom (Oct 16).  We were in Cabo for Sammy's 61st and he threw a great show!!!  A packed to the rafters Cabo Wabo crowd consumed Cabo Wabo Repo like water in Cabo's gorgeous climate.  I myself had my fair share of Cabo Repo with M. GardneSean and Sonya Sailor and Suzy Q!  We had a beautiful 4 days .   Also mey dear friend Dylan caught and released a beautiful marlin and I caught dinner,  a nice sized Dorado ( mahi mahi to some of you).   Hey Sammy, thank you for the wonderful hospitality!  As you know, if there is anything we can ever do for you, just ask!  Thanks also for introducing me to Chef Antonio.  Do not ever change!  Feliz Cumpleaños!!!
As for dinner, Jo and Mary B. graciously invited us to their restaurant Panchos, an institution in Cabo.  Their chef prepared Dorado 6 ways for the nine of us: sashimi, ceviche, blackened, breaded, grilled and fajitas. I know many of you already know, but there is nothing like eating fresh seafood.  It does not get fresher  than catching it, delivering it to the restaurant by 2 pm and then eating it by 8 pm.  Also did I mention Pancho's has an amazing tequila selection and tasting program?  They do.  Definately a must on your next visit to Cabo!

T his is a greeting to Tequila Master Raul Deju.  He is our current c hampion road warrior, galavanting between Europe and Asia while raising a family in San Diego!  You go brotha!!!

Great also to hear again from Tequila Master  Jonathan D. from Tokyo!   Start  planning your trip to our distillery opening!!!!

See you guys next week, Julio

This is a special greeting that goes out to Ramon Castro from your wife, inviting you to Tommy's!  Ramon, I hope if you make it down that you like it as your wife tells us you are a Tequila aficionado.

Talk later, julio

Hello Friends of Tommy's
The Tommy's racing team will be making it's final home appearance Sunday 9/28 @ Sears Pt (Infineon) Raceway.
The track is just 30 miles from SF right on the edge of Sonoma county.
It's a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon sitting in the sun, drinking margaritas, and watching motorcycle racing. :)
Grab a bottle of your favorite tequila, a jug of Tommy's Margarita Mix, an ice chest, and come on out.
Kids and dogs are welcome.
I will be personally participating in Race 4, around 11:30am, and race 10 around 3:30pm.
Julio himself will be making an appearance with some silver shakers.
We'll set up our own temporary bar right in my pit in the heart of the racing paddock.
Of course I'll have to wait until my second race is done ;)
If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

Do you like motorcycle racing? Tequila Master Tocayo will be racing this Sunday at  Sear's point and would like to invite anyone who wants to come see him.  I will be there with Lily passing out some adult beverages... Here is what Tocayo writes:

16 de Septiembre 2008

FELICES FIESTAS PATRIAS!!!!!!!

Today is Mexican Independence Day!!!!  Please remeber that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence day but rather the conmemoration of a historic battle that took place outside of Puebla.  So today is the day!   Please go out and drink some tequila responsibly ( if one is 21 or over!)

After years of not updating our TEQUILA LIST, I think I finally learned how to do it!!!!  All of thi swas prompted by the ownwer of Siete Leguas, Fernando Gonzalez who spoke to David G. and asked why his products were not on my list.  I suddenly remebered that our list had not been updated in years!  Our list is now 90% complete.  I still need to add like Alquimilla, Tom Estes' OCHO, Don Pilar and a few others.  Also one list that will not be on the website will be our vintage list.  One fact that separates Tommy's from all other Tequila bars on earth is our vintage list.  We have been stashing Tequila away for decades!  Our Tequila Masters and PHD's will have access to this list.

The CHICAS CAZADORES were as always amazing!   My hat is off to Bacardi for making this happen.  Tommy's like several other businesses wrote a letter to the state and to the feds asking for support of this group and we are so happy we did.  They obviously promote Cazadores but they do much more for the entire industry.  Great job Bacardi!  Thank you CAZADORES.

Have you tried TEQUILA DON PILAR?  This is a relatively new HIGHLAND Añejo made for Don Pilar C. who now resides in Northern California but is originally from Jalisco.  He has an amazing story of his American dream!  We are planning another DON PILAR Night with him.  Hopefully you can join us and learn about his amazing life story! Come by and ask for some DON PILAR.

We first "launched" weeks before the "official" launch with Tommy's customers being the first in Northern california to sample Tom Estes' and Felipe camarena's new tequila.  Ocho is made from single estates and vintage dated.  It is highly allocated   At retail to our knowledge only LIQUID EXPERIENCE on Haight Street has it.  Blackwell's can special order it.  I would also expect JUG SHOP, WINE IMPRESSIONS<, COIT LIQUORS and JOHN WALKER to be able to special order it.  It definately should be in the collections of evry serious Tequila aficionado.

Tommy's is very proud to be making the margaritas for the Mexican Consulate for their events yesterday and today.  Have a great week!!!

19TH OF AUGUST 2008

Wow, after more than 1 year of not updating the site we are back.  So what did you miss by not coming personally to Tommy's to find out?

Here are some highlights.  As usual thank you all for coming.  We really appreciate your business and never realize thatwe are honored when you choose to spend your hard earned dollars at Tommy's.  we also never lose site that while fancy places come and go, the true restaurateur never forgets his/her customres.  Tommy's remains committed to bringing you value in a fun, informal and family environment.

Can your tequila bar say this? Please visit our competitors.

OCHO TEQUILA

Tommy's unveiled OCHO TEQUILA several weeks ago to serious tequila aficionados who wanted to taste Tom Estes' tequila before anyone else in California.  Neeless to say it was a big success and is on the menu now.  We will have a formal OCHO introduction on AUG 27th with Tom Estes in attendance.  Come on by if you would  like to learn more about  OCHO.

CHICAS CAZADORES

TOMMY'S IS PROUD ONCE AGAIN TO HOST THE CHICAS CAZADORES. We will host them Sunday August 24th from 3 pm.  Please get here early if you would like to take pictures, get autographs and just dream...   Of course enjoy Cazadores Tequila all day and everyday!  The Chicas Cazores are a professional folkloric dance company from Jalisco, Mexico.

Hope to see you soon at Tommy's!

I hope some of you made it to see Mickey Fimbres have his best race ever!  I apologize for not making it.  I had to help rescue some beautiful tropical  fish and fly to Guadalajara that evening.  Tocayo again I apologize!.

This is a special greeting that goes out to Ramon Castro from your wife, inviting you to Tommy's!  Ramon, I hope if you make it down that you like it as your wife tells us you are a Tequila aficionado.

Congratulations to Dr. Ed Feng, our latest Ninja Master.  Ed is amazing and we even hope to have him give us some advice at the distillery next year!

Talk later, julio

Friday Night September 26, 2008

-Mickey

Do you like motorcycle racing? Tequila Master Tocayo will be racing this Sunday at  Sear's point and would like to invite anyone who wants to come see him.  I will be there with Lily passing out some adult beverages... Here is what Tocayo writes:

Ouch!  Sorry for the 3 month update!  I helped Sammy launch Cabo Uno in New York to rave reviews with his good friends Mario Batlali and Emeril Lagasse.   The tasting was held in a private room at Dos Caminos in New York.  What an amazing party!  Great drinks, food and an ambience of appreciation, recognition and felicitation for Sammy, afterall the night before he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  In particular we wish to congratulate Sammy on all of his success.  Also congrats to him for selling part of his business to Gruppo Campari! All  the best my friend and enjoy Italia!

The Tommy's/Julio margarita is now on the menu at over 25 places worldwide.  We are so flattered and appreciate everyone out there that strives to make great margaritas based on quality 100% agave tequila, fresh lime juice and agave .  Always easier said than done, integrity is key.  Stick to your guns.  We count some of the best bars in the world as friends and they likewise have taught us so many things.  So go out their and demand quality.

Tommy's was voted the 6th best bar in the world by Australian Bartender Magazine.  Thank you for the amazing honor.  As I said last year, poeple in Australia are  amazing!  Oh by the way, they can hold their libations as well!  Are we really the 6th best bar in the world?  Who knows... but remember why one goes out and hands over their hard earned money to any hospitality establishment: to receive an experience and be treated well.  Tommy's tries to create a friendly environment that is family oriented and genuine.  No text book formulas, no focus group meetings to find out why our customers are not happy.  We just try to treat everyone the way we would like to be treated.  Thank you for your preference and please, please visit all of our competitors.

What can I say about CarlitosCharles Vexenat  came our way by the legendary Dr. Dre Masso, arguably one of the best bartenders on earth but a 10x better person .  I remember him telling me years ago that Charles would be a superstar.  On June 5th I believe Charles, "baptized" Carlitos in Mexico won the Theme Best bartender of the UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We were of course present for his finals heat and he blew everyone out of the water.  The quality of his work is magnificent.  His passion for the craft and his willingness to give great service should be copied by all.  I raise a glass of Tapatio X.A to you my friend.  I look forward to seeing you in Mexico for 7/7/7! Carlitos you are a superstar!  Sampa!!!  Sampa!!!!  Sampa!!!!

More London notes,  belated happy birthday Charlotte.  Thank you for letting us partake in your festivities at the Dorchester.  Nice job by the way also.  Congrats to Magaly Franco , the new UK Cazadores ambassador.  Congrats to Tom Estes my fellow ambassador of tequila.  Tom you crushed us with Total Tequila at bar show!  If anyone ever goes to London, craves 100% agave tequila and does not make a pilgrimage to Cafe Pacifico or La Perlas, you are missing out.  These are places where it all started in Europe.

Rolo Tomassi goes down in the end.

Hey do not forget to throw fabulous margarita parties over the summer!  Please ask for Tommy's Killer margarita mix at your favoirtie retailers!  Remember to read labels and demand quality.  Thanks for reading... Hope you all go out and get iPhones!  Tommy's loves Apple!

March 13, 2007

Welcome all!   Just some quick notes over the last couple of weeks:  Tommy's is so proud to be part of the San Francisco restaurant community.  With all due respect to the many great cities and towns in this amazing country, food industry professionals widely believe there are only 4 true restaurant cities in the USA: New York, where I am at present, Chicago, New Orleans and of course San Francisco.  Again with all due respect to say Las Vegas, which may have the best dining scene on earth because great chefs from these places have opened satelites there Tommy's nevber forgets how special and priveledged we are to serve not only the Richmond district but all who come our way!  Thanks for coming!
As i said, I am in new York City for a few days to help my dear friend Sammy Hagar launch his amazing and new Extra Añejo Tequila, Cabo Uno tonight!!!!!   Many industry professional, chefs, musicians and other friends of Sammy will gather tonight for their first formal tasting of Uno.  I have been priveledged to have tried Uno  several times in the course of its aging to state that it is one of the finest extra añejos I have tried.  Today all who join us will be in for a trea!  More tomorrow!
Also congratulations to Sammy for being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!! It is cool to see Sammy recognized for his musical contributions!  Sammy , like he has all of this time on his hands, started cabo Wabo Tequila  many years ago and now has the second largest selling ultra premium Tequila in the United States!
Everyone have a great St. Patrick's day!!!!!!!!!

February 9, 2007

I want to thank everyone who prayed and sent positive thoughts to the family of my driver Don Esteban Casillas.  He is now back at his home and will make a full recovery.  A true miracle!   I commmend the entire Casillas family for being so strong during this difficult period.  I told Don Esteban last week at his home in Guadalajara that I expect him to still be my driver.  Afterall he has beeen with me for six years and I expect him to be part of my team for many years to come.

I have to say that there are many exciting things coming in the world of tequila in terms of advertising. Look for major brands to continue to reach more customers by venturing into the public eye.  As Tequila becomes a more globalized spirit, let's also not forget to show continued support for the small brands that we think are special.  Afterall, we all benefit from the diverse spectrum of tequila flavor.

I would like to thank German Gonzalez again for coming to Tommy's to host our Chinaco Negro event.  There were only 530 bottles of the world of Lot # 15.  There are now considerably less!!!!

Likewise I would like to thank Eduardo Orendain of Arette for dropping by and helping us with our promotion.  Tommy's was one  of the first places outside of Mexico to carry Arette.  We are extremely proud to call Eduardo a family friend.

If you are planning to have a party and make margaritas, please try our Tommy's Heavenly Margarita Mix .  Make sure you look at the ingredients.  We are not neon in color, we will not use high fructose corn syrup and we are fresh and natural.  Please compare our product with those our competitors.  If you are in Aneheim for the natural products show come by and see us!
